An Instroduction on the TikTok Ban
Posted by: altug
Every day, Americans scroll through TikTok for and average of 95 minutes a day. While doing so, they share their location, biometric data and browsing patterns with a Chinese company, unknowingly. It is true that the same Americans are sharing similar data with other American companies such as Meta, Amazon and Google every day, however, when it comes to a Chinese company, concerns tend to arise. This selective response has pushed authorities to announce a ban, yet such a move would be shortsighted and prove ineffective. The solution is not to ban TikTok but to finally do what the U.S. has failed to accomplish for decades: establish comprehensive federal data privacy legislation that protects all Americans. Specifically, this legislation should be paired with the implementation of a data localization mandate, applied consistently to foreign and American companies operating abroad, ensuring both national security and international credibility in digital governance.
